1999 Hibiscus Festival at Newstead House

Newstead House was radiant in her meticulously manicured gardens and lawns as it peacefully nestled on the banks of the Breakfast Creek and Brisbane River junction.

The "Diapason Recorder Ensemble" played music in the drawing room - spanning three centuries - complimenting the profusion of gorgeous Hibiscus blooms.

Despite the heavy rain of the previous two days, flowers were plentiful and adorned the rooms that are all authentically retained in the period of this gracious historic home - Brisbane's oldest.

The weather, even though very wet, did not deter the many folks from venturing outdoors to see the Hibiscus blooms, hear the lovely music and have tasty Devonshire tea on the northern verandah where the tables were decorated with miniature Hibiscus blooms.

Newstead House was built and first occupied on 18th August, 1846 and to mark the occasion of the sesqui-centenary (150th anniversary) of the House, the Hibiscus Society of Queensland Inc. released a Hibiscus bloom "Newstead" in 1996. It is a medium single, pink and grey with an ivory edge and is totally indicative of the character of Newstead House and the "Friends of Newstead" who so lovingly care for her.
