1998 1st Birthday & Annual General Meeting
|
NEW COMMITTEE: Chairman - Graham Charlesworth; Vice-Chairpeople are Rosemary Gibson and John Spandley; Secretary-Treasurer - Elaine Westerman; Publicity - Fred Westerman. The A.G.M. was a special day not just as the first birthday. The highlight was to present Kaye Stevans and husband Bob with honorary memberships in view of their contact with hibiscus happenings over the years. The cultivar Kaye Stevans, raised by Kaye's friend of many years ago, the hybridizer Allan McMullen, was promoted for its texture and mothering superiority as pod parent to excellent new seedlings from Hibiscus Paradise Nursery. Fred Westerman was M.C. in the planning stages and President, Gynith Whatmough, participated in the election of the new committee and the presentations with Wally Morgan introducing Kaye to the meeting and Greg Lindsay discussing his hybridizing with the cultivar. It was noted that the Kaye and Bob had donated hibiscus booklets giving a lot of past hibiscus history and Bob gave one of his wood-turned fence-post masterpieces as a hibiscus bloom display stand using skewers. The pictures give a graphic summary of the day. |

Rosemary and Ian Gibson show that basking in hibiscus is monkey business - a shady character perhaps! This formed a centre piece to the many flowers soon on display. |

| Pictures here show Gynith meeting Bob and Kaye with Fred Westerman at the rear, Kaye receiving the membership certificate and Greg telling Kaye what a wonderful flower the Kaye Stevans cultivar is. The stand on the table shows the seedlings with Herm Geller which was used to supply the pollen for the new varieties. The transmitted texture of Kaye Stevans combined with the size and dominant red eye of Herm Geller has created excellent progeny. | |
