Ken Ewing
Moonraker x Antique Gold bred by Fred Westerman

Sadly, Ken Ewing recently passed away after many years' involvement with the Society especially as a willing worker at all our shows as can be seen in previous show pages.

Once again, PEOPLE were the central theme of this Show.  Blooms were named after people who have served the community in some way and others named after members.  Many have already been named after members throughout the last year.

Prominent hybridizer, Fred Westerman has been successful breeding excellent new blooms over the last few years. These bloom tributes were bred by him.  His seedlings were also a feature of the Show.

Plants supplied by Hibiscus Paradise Nursery were sold, many propagated from Fred Westerman's seedlings.  The best sales for many years were experienced in the context of local dams being so low, a complete hose ban may be in place by the end of the month.  Hibiscus growers are an enthusiastic group of gardeners to be sure.

Harold Caulfield
Zambezi x Harvest Moon bred by Fred Westerman

Harold was Parks Curator for the Brisbane City Council and an
authority and spokesman for all things horticultural in years gone by and also a prominent gardening columnist for the Courier Mail. Read more!

The plant "Harold Caulfield" was presented to his widow, Pauline. Here she is with Fred Westerman, the hybridiser.

"Ken Ewing" was presented to Beryl, his widow as a tribute to his long service to the Society.  Here, she poses with Fred Westerman, its hybridiser

Brian Bowker made the presentation of the hibiscus "Ken Ewing" to Beryl Ewing.

Society President hams it up with Marjory Brown and "Marjory Brown", a bloom tribute from the past.
