Hibiscus Society of Queensland Inc.
SPECIAL OCCASIONS 2004
The Grafting Party (and BBQ) at Fred
and Elaine Westerman's
Tuesday 16th November 2004
The "vision splendid" was a surprise as I did not realise so many hibiscus could be grown in the short time the Westermans had been living here. Fred's large range of quality plants used for breeding and the tremendous range of seedlings from propagation tray size to maturity was amazing. Many of his seedlings have been seen from time to time on the Internet but what a sight to see them at home!
The range of flowers was down as a fair amount of pruning of many of the best ones had already occurred for spring propagation. Many more got the chop today as eager beavers begged for wood.
Of course, for many it was the food at the BBQ that was the greatest attraction as they waited for others to get scion wood or learn the basics of grafting from some of the experienced grafters. Many just wanted someone to graft the wood they'd just obtained. I know I was busy grafting and Brian Cheers and Reg Cornwell did quite a few as well. I'm sure the serious grafting enquirers gained much from the day.
A Selection of Pictures from the day -
mostly Fred's seedlings.
